Sodium Hypochlorite Solution NaClO Strong Oxidizing Agent Used As A Bleaching Agent
Sodium hypochlorite solution is the aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite. It is a slightly yellow solution with a very pungent smell and is extremely unstable. Preparation of sodium hypochlorite solution
Chlorine gas dissolves in cold and dilute sodium hydroxide solution to produce sodium hypochlorite, sodium chloride and water.
Cl2 + 2NaOH → NaClO + NaCl + H2O
Note that when chlorine gas dissolves in hot and concentrated sodium hydroxide solution, it does not produce sodium hypochlorite, but generates sodium chloride, sodium chlorate and water.
3Cl2 + 6NaOH → 5NaCl + NaClO3 +3H2O
Chemical properties:
